The optional "powdered egg shells" in the recipe are a good source of calcium for dogs. It's easy to make if you have a coffee grinder and remember to save egg shells as you use them.
4 cups cooked brown rice (typically, this is 1 cup rice, 2 1/4 cups water, cooked per package instructions)
1 pound ground beef (good quality)
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 cup organic green beans, finely chopped (frozen can be used)
1/2 cup frozen blueberries, finely chopped
1/3 cup almond four (or finely ground almonds)
15 oz. can 100% pure pumpkin puree (...NOT pumpkin pie mix with all the spices!)
GLAD Press'n Seal Wrap
OPTIONAL: Powdered egg shells **
YIELD: Approximately 20-24 patties.
** You can make this by saving egg shells (rinsed with water). Bake them on a baking sheet in a 350 F oven for 10-15 minutes until they are a light, golden color. Let cool and then grind to a fine powder using a coffee or spice grinder. Store in a sealed spice jar.
- Cook rice according to package instructions
- While the rice cooking, brown the ground beef in 1 Tablespoon olive oil. Drain fat when done.
- Finely chop green beans and blueberries. You can do this using a knife or pulsing them in a food processor or chopper. The latter works especially well if you are using frozen beans or blueberries.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped blueberries, chopped green beans, and pumpkin puree. Stir to mix evenly.
- Add almond flour (or ground almonds). Mix well.
- Add cooked rice. Mix well.
- Place a 16" (approx.) sheet of Press'n Seal wrap on counter or working space.
- Firmly pack mixture into a 1/4-cup dry measuring cup. Carefully empty contents onto a section of the Press'n Seal wrap. You should plan to fit eight (8) patties on the wrap (i.e., this is 4 rows of 2 patties). Leave approx. 4” between each patty. Gently press down on each mound of mixture (with your hand) to form a patty.
- Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon egg shell powder on each patty.
- Cover with another layer of Press'n Seal wrap. Seal the patties by pressing out all the air.
- Use scissors to separate the patties into individually wrapped packets.
- Repeat the process with remaining mixture.
- Store patties in freezer (in large Zip-Loc Freezer bags) until ready to use.
